“Disappear behind the camera and scare away the subject’’

This quote was made up entirely by me with the intention of sounding profound, however, it does encapsulate my approach to portraiture–especially when working with people would have never modeled before. Many people are shy, awkward, or uncomfortable when they have a camera pointed at them, myself included. I believe that when I am taking portraits that my job is in front of the camera first, and behind the camera second. It is essential to be able to work with your subjects, make them laugh, make them smile, make them feel comfortable with a naturally uncomforting process. I strive to bring out the human elements of joy, laughter, and beauty in all of my work by making a connection with the people I am photographing. Making them feel at ease with me and my camera.
